Our Future

The Carying Place receives about 70 calls a week and 4,000 calls a year from families experiencing homelessness. Our community’s need for affordable housing is real, as evidenced by our three-month wait list. Our plans for growth are driven by the need to empower more families to reach housing stability and self-sustainability.

Our growth plan includes an enhanced building initiative in partnership with Greenwood Forest Baptist Church, DHIC, YMCA, and the Town of Cary. Together, we are working to address key community priorities, with a primary focus on affordable housing and childcare.

 

The mixed-use development will feature a childcare facility (operated by Greenwood Forest’s current preschool) and non-profit services provided by The Carying Place and DHIC. The upper floors will offer transitional housing for families in The Carying Place’s programs and affordable rental units managed by DHIC.

This thoughtfully chosen location provides convenient access to essential amenities, including a grocery store, pharmacy, and various service industry jobs—all within walking distance. The site is also connected to public transit, ensuring accessibility for residents.

Additionally, adjacent land owned by the Town of Cary is expected to support future affordable homeownership opportunities, further advancing the project’s impact.

Who We Are

The Carying Place, Inc. empowers homeless working families on their journey to permanent self-sustaining housing and workforce development. We teach financial literacy and critical life skills while providing short-term housing for hard-working families with children. We have served more than 540 families with an 80% success rate. Our Journey Home program is designed to change a family’s course for generations. We measure success using the following metrics-based objectives: the number of families and children receiving financial literacy and housing in our program each year; the percentage of families who achieve housing upon graduation; the number of individuals who increase their skills, resulting in higher wages; and the number of individuals who receive homeownership preparation.

Casting a Vision Foward

  • Extend our Transitional Housing to accommodate our growing list of transitional housing families from 30 to 60 annually. We will add an additional 9 units where we can house families to accommodate this growth.
  • Create Graduate Program Housing for 20 program participants at a rent of 30% of their average monthly income. We anticipate that 1 in 3 graduates will want to adopt a graduate journey and continue to work on elevating their situation. This affordable approach to housing allows them to stay heavily invested in the program for an additional year.Grow our Graduate Journeys to accommodate all the new families completing our 16-week program.
